College, it's a plan, not a dream!

Washington State GEAR UP has been serving students from low-income families since 1999. Washington received its second six year GEAR UP (Gaining EarlyAwareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) federal grant in September 2005.

The Higher Education Coordinating Board administers the Washington State GEAR UP program on behalf of the governor with it partners the University of Washington and the Washington Education Foundation. GEAR UP encourages young people to have high expectations, study hard, and pursue and succeed in college.

A key component of the GEAR UP program is the Scholars Project.

The GEAR UP Scholars Project provides comprehensive college and awareness activities to students and their families.

Scholars participate in the program beginning in the 7th grade and continue through high school graduation. The Scholars Project is a year-round program where students discover the importance of education, improve academic skills, identify career interests, and explore college opportunties.
