During School Program - 30 hours/week
I. Lunch Meetings - 9 hours/week
The GEAR UP coordinator meets with students during lunch every weekday. This will consist of lunchroom check-ins, homework help, and program related activities. Lunch meetings may substitute for after school time if you are required to attend after school and are unable to do so.
II. Individual Meetings - 21 hours/week The GEAR UP coordinator has regular office hours open to students. During those hours students or parents may drop-in or set up an appointment for individual consultation. This may include benchmark review, goal setting, and teacher/parent conferencing. The GEAR UP Coordinator will also use this time to provide supplemental opportunities for students who are unable to attend the after school program.
After School Program - 10 hours/week
I. Program Days, Dates, and Times: The GEAR UP after school program runs four days a week. It commences September 22, 2008, and ends June 5, 2009. The program is not in session due to holidays on the following dates: November 10, 2008 November 26, 2008 - November 28, 2008 December 22, 2009 - January 2, 2009 January 19. 2009 February 13, 2009 - February 16, 2009 March 30, 2009 - April 3, 2009 May 25, 2009

II. Transportation The after school program is on-site at MHS, therefore, students go to the GEAR UP classroom directly following their last class of the regular school day. When the program is finished, students have the option of walking home, riding the GEAR UP sponsored activity bus, or getting picked up.
III. Facilities The after school program takes place in the MHS Learning Community 300 wing, which consists of classrooms, a computer lab, and an open meeting space.
IV. Activities and Schedule:
During the regular meeting time of 2:30-4:45 students are engaged in activities aimed at enhancing academic, career, and personal/social development. Each day the program begins by providing students with recreational activity in order to allow for physical exertion at the end of a full school day and to promote personal health and fitness. This time sometimes includes team building exercises in order to expand personal/social development. A healthy snack is also available for students at this time. Following the recreation/snack time the program will focus on the following:
Monday - Minority Achievers Program (MAP) Tuesday - Study Skills and Homework Help in the Computer Lab. Wednesday - MAP, Pre-WASL Activities and Homework Help. Thursday - Career Exploration and Homework Help in the Computer Lab.
Friday- Request Information from a College, Adopt-a-College Presentations and MAP. Everyday of the week we will be offering Homework Help. On Tuesday and Thursday we will have Computer Assisted Lab. MAP is a program offered by the YMCA which offers homework help, tutoring and YMCA sponsored Field Trips. On Tuesdays we will learn about ways to study more effectively. This will help fulfill a secondary benchmark. On Wednesdays we will have Pre-WASL activities in order to better prepare you for the WASL. It is required that you attend at least three of these sessions. On Thursdays we will have Career sessions in order to fulfill a secondary benchmark. On Fridays we will request information from colleges. This is also a secondary benchmark. On homework help days the GEAR UP coordinator, staff volunteers, peer tutors, and/or community volunteers are available to assist students with homework assignments, projects, and studying for tests. Personalized Focus
I. Student Performance Monitoring
In order to monitor individual student performance and ensure that students are making adequate progress towards achieving the ninth grade benchmarks, the GEAR UP Secretary runs discipline reports on a bi-weekly basis as well as attendance and grade reports on a monthly basis. The Secretary screens for students that may be in need of an individual conference with the GEAR UP Coordinator or a school counselor.
II. Academic Diagnostic Assessments
The GEAR UP Secretary gathers data pertinent to student performance: discipline, attendance, grades, WASL scores, and special services (e.g. Special Education, Title, and ELL). The GEAR UP Coordinator along with other members from the GEAR UP Team identifies students for whom intervention should be a high priority. In tandem with conferencing, academic assessments are administered to students that have below a 2.0 in order to help determine the cause of low academic performance. The academic assessments will be given in the subject area in which the student is struggling. Results determine the most appropriate method of intervention for the student.

Field trips seek to provide educational or cultural opportunities, while meeting the needs of the students and goals of the program.
